Futuring the rural

9 October @ 14:00 - 15:00 CEST

Public lecture with Edgar Vladimirenko, practicing architect and urbanist in Lithuania and UNESCO Chair Fellow

As tractors block capital boulevards and city ministries plan the countryside from afar, the line between rural and urban dissolves. If we were to acknowledge the “complete urbanisation of society”, rural territories become part of the urban system with functional and physical ties to the cities. Therefore rural Lithuania, and much of Europe, is neither the romantic periphery nor a museum piece; it is a palimpsest of political experiments whose unresolved governance now hinders ecological and social resilience.

This lecture aims to trace that dissolution. From Soviet agro-settlements to airport ghost‑villages, through several symbolic locations, the lecture seeks to reveal that rural areas are laboratories where traces of various “political seasons” have been inscribed. It further explores how tools of architecture and urbanism allow us to speculate the future of rural territories.
