SUMMARY:From Knowledge to Action: Knowledge\, Beliefs\, and Cooperation for DRR and Climate Change Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore how interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches can enhance Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation\, combining scientific knowledge and collective action to build resilient communities. \n\n\n\n\nThis event invites participants to reflect on the value of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches in the fields of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation. Throughout the day\, we will explore how collaborative efforts between natural and social sciences can enhance our understanding of — and responses to — the complex challenges facing our natural-human systems. Discussions will also focus on collective decision-making processes\, examining how individual beliefs shape collective choices and how cooperation between public institutions and citizens can foster more resilient communities. Theoretical insights on these core themes will be paired with empirical examples and real-world cases to inspire practical reflection and dialogue. \n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n12:00 – 13:30 \nLight lunch \n\n13:30- 14:00\n\nOpening and introduction \n\n14:00 – 15:30\n\n\nThematic session \n\nAndrea Pirni\, University of Genova\n\nInterdisciplinary knowledge production \nThe talk intends to problematize and\, in doing so\, to encourage an initial approach to the relationship between the Mathematical-Natural Physical Sciences and the social sciences for the purposes of Disaster Risk Management. An attempt will be made to consider how to integreate phenomena\, information and data that come from the social sciences with the modeling and scenarios that define the MNF sciences. Finally\, we will also discuss the development of a common minimum scientific language. \n\nFrancesca Vigotti\, Politecnico di Milano\n\nAssessing and empowering fragile communities \nIn this contribution I will discuss the outcomes of Task 7.4.4\, titled “A New Approach to Integrated Planning Based on Co-Design Processes for DRR and CCA Policies.” The main objective of this activity was to develop antifragility strategies for fragile territories by integrating routine and emergency planning through participatory approaches. We focused on territories characterized by multi-risk scenarios\, demographic decline\, and remoteness from essential services. Our research was grounded in three key pillars: Prevention and Resilience\, Regeneration\, and Education and Participation. The work was carried out in 12 municipalities in Lomellina\, Lombardy\, where we conducted a thorough assessment of strategic spaces. The results include tools—such as survey forms\, mapping instruments\, and educational materials—to enhance the understanding and management of built environments\, heritage\, and open spaces. \n\nClaudio Marciano\, University of Genoa\n\nHeat wave and floods in Genoa: a Risk Storyline \nRisk Storylines are scenario techniques that foresee the impact chains of multi-hazard events and the most relevant actions to mitigate\, respond to and learn from such events. An interdisciplinary research team\, engaged in the extended Return partnership\, has built a model for the elaboration of storylines and applied it in several urban contexts\, including that of Genoa. The paper describes the model\, and the main results obtained in the context of a storyline on a heat wave followed by heavy rainfall in the context of the Ligurian capital. \n\n\n15:30 – 16:00\n\nCoffee break \n\n16:00 – 17:30\n\n\nThematic Session \n\nPavel Janda\, University of Milan\n\nCollective choices and collective beliefs \nCollective choices depend on collective beliefs. How we form collective beliefs from individual beliefs to a high degree determines collective beliefs and\, thus\, decisions. My interest lies in formation methods that are resilient to manipulations and embody important values by satisfying desirable properties. For example\, the method should not be dictatorial. Or\, our method should be resilient to the strategic proliferation of information. So\, one cannot strategically disclose relevant information before or after forming the collective belief to manipulate it. I will explore various ways to manipulate the formation of collective beliefs and how to make the methods more resilient. For example\, I will explore whether and under what assumptions we can escape Arrow’s impossibility result reinterpreted for belief aggregation. \n\nRiccardo Stupazzini\, LABSUS\n\nShared risk management \nThis presentation critically explores the concept of shared administration as an innovative governance approach to disaster risk management\, emphasizing active civic engagement. Through an analysis of the case study of Bagnara Calabra—where local authorities and citizens collaboratively established a civil protection agreement—the discussion illustrates how participatory frameworks enable communities and local governments to jointly identify vulnerabilities\, implement targeted preventive measures\, and build lasting resilience. Particularly in contexts where institutional resources are limited and vulnerability to extreme events is high\, shared administration serves not merely as a supplemental strategy but as a fundamental mechanism for community empowerment\, ensuring risk mitigation strategies are collectively devised\, endorsed\, and implemented. \n\n\n17:30 – 18:30\n\nTheater performance “Change the Climate” \n\n\n18:30 – 19:30 \n\nAperitif \nThis event takes place as a SOS4CC side event. The event is open to all conference participants and external interested parties. \nThe event is realised within the activities of the Return project\, financed by the Italian PNRR (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza). SUMMARY:2025 SOS4CC - SOcial Sciences 4 Climate Change. From Knowledge to Action
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Climate Change and Transformation at Eurac Research is proud to announce the upcoming SOS4CC – SOcial Sciences 4 Climate Change conference “from Knowledge to Action” \n\n\n\nWhat is the conference about?\n\n\nClimate change stands as a defining challenge of our era\, compromising ecological transformation but also demanding profound societal change. As we navigate urgent issues—such as climate change mitigation and adaptation\, addressing socio-economic and class inequalities\, fostering solidarity across diverse identities\, and creating inclusive\, decolonial and recognitional practice spaces—we emphasize the critical contributions of social sciences in facilitating these transformations. \nScience is tasked with the crucial role not only of providing facts and knowledge but also of actively contributing to socio-ecological transformations. This conference focuses on the role of social sciences in informing the understanding of climate change impacts\, challenges\, opportunities and in shaping effective responses. \nFocusing on the socio-cultural dimensions of climate change\, the conference will explore the roles of EU\, national\, and local governments\, civil society organizations\, social movements\, the financial and business sectors\, and citizens in addressing the climate crisis. It will examine issues related to climate governance\, transformation practices\, social inequalities\, climate justice\, gender and other intersectional dimensions\, community resilience\, climate change adaptation\, and risk mitigation. We will also investigate the intersection of scientific research and practical applications in developing innovative solutions for climate resilience that are context-specific and culturally relevant. \nBy employing interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary lenses\, we aim to enhance our understanding of how to create actionable knowledge and solutions collaboratively with diverse stakeholders beyond academia. This approach emphasizes the importance of integrating insights from multiple disciplines while engaging non-academic sectors to address complex climate challenges effectively. \nThe conference seeks to achieve the following objectives: \n\nExplore governance\, regulatory frameworks\, and just transition principles to foster research-policy connections for climate action and social-ecological transformation\nStudy transformative approaches to overcoming unsustainable systems and fostering socio-ecological change.\nExamine the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized groups\, promoting intersectional approaches and community solidarity for justice.\nImprove understanding of behavioural drivers\, barriers\, lock/in for climate adaptation and risk mitigation as well as community/led initiatives effectively supporting just transformation and community resilience.\n\nJoin us in exploring how we can further connect and mobilize social sciences research to tackle the challenge of accelerating change while actively contributing to a more equitable society that prioritizes both people and the planet. Through this collaborative effort\, we can better understand the interconnectedness of social systems and environmental sustainability in the face of climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference theme\n\nThe Center for Climate Change and Transformation at Eurac Research invites researchers to discuss the socio-cultural dimensions of climate change and the critical role of social sciences in studying it through using an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary lens. SUMMARY:Collaborative Housing and Social Inclusion: Insights\, Evidence\, and Future Directions
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative housing has grown to include diverse and vulnerable groups but still lacks public awareness and sufficient institutional backing. \nAmid the ongoing housing crisis\, collaborative housing\, including cooperative models\, offer a promising alternative to mainstream housing provision. In various places across Europe\, these housing projects have demonstrated their ability to offer affordable and high-quality living spaces while promoting participation and mutual support among residents as well as a resource-conscious lifestyle. \nIn recent years\, the scope of collaborative housing has expanded to foster greater diversity among residents\, such as through intergenerational projects\, and by addressing needs of a broader range of vulnerable and socio-economically disadvantaged groups\, including people with migrant and refugee backgrounds. Yet\, this housing field remains largely unfamiliar to the broader public and lacks institutional support. \nAgainst this backdrop\, the event will examine the potential of collaborative housing to promote diversity and social inclusion at the neighbourhood level. National and international experts from academia\, policy\, and practice will share insights from various places and discuss how partnerships and funding programmes can leverage the potential of collaborative housing to advance socially inclusive neighbourhood development and urban regeneration. Following the presentations and panel discussion\, the audience will also be invited to take part in the discussion. \nIn the morning\, there will be a guided visit to a new collaborative housing project which was realized by Cooperativa Sole in Bolzano’s Oltrisarco neighbourhood. It is an optional addition to the event programme. More details will follow. \nLanguage: English \nProgram: https://www.unibz.it/assets/Events/Pdf/cc-cooperatives/Preliminary-Programme_CCEvent_September_2025.docx.pdf \nRegistration: https://eventregistration.unibz.it/Login.asp?IDcommessa=UN25050&Lang=IT \nEvent website: https://www.unibz.it/en/events/collaborative-housing-and-social-inclusion-insights-evidence-and-future-directions

SUMMARY:Towards a Circular Economy in South Tyrol
DESCRIPTION:Co-selecting transformation measures across sectors \nThe transition to a circular economy (CE) is critical for achieving resource efficiency\, dealing with resource scarcity\, waste generation\, and building a sustainable future for cities and regions. Over the past decade\, the European Union (EU) has committed significantly to advancing circular economy principles\, advocating for action at regional\, national and local levels. However\, most economies remain still linear\, and the CE is a marginal approach in many territories. In the EU\, for example\, the CE accounts only about 2% of total EU GDP and circular material use rate was 12% in 2023\, far below the 24% targeted in the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. \nSince 2020\, South Tyrol has committed to adopting a circular economy strategy\, which is currently under development and addresses key sectors such as construction\, which is responsible for over the 40% of waste generation in the Province. Despite these positive developments\, the adoption of a CE in South Tyrol remains limited due to multiple barriers which are not technological\, but related to production and consumption patterns\, regulation\, financing and governance\, particularly in tracking progress towards a CE. For example\, most available data focus on waste rather than broader resource flows and urban metabolism\, making it difficult to track and assess the impact of circularity measures at local level. \nThe workshop “Towards a Circular Economy in South Tyrol: co-selecting transformation measures across sectors” aims to present the results of a study focused on urban metabolism in South Tyrol\, and to provide an overview of the current initiatives and projects on CE in the Province of Bolzano. The workshop aims to actively engage local businesses\, local administrators\, NGOs and academic stakeholders in discussing and co-selecting measures in five key sectors (metal packing\, concrete and other construction\, fruits and wine\, copper production\, aluminium production\, wood) that can be more effective in accelerating the transition towards a circular economy in South Tyrol. \n\nAgenda: \n8:45\n\nRegistration \n\n\n\n9:00\n\n\nWelcome and introduction \nWolfram Sparber\, Eurac Research \n\n\n\n\n9:10\n\n\nHow much materials circulate in South Tyrol?
