SUMMARY:Affrontare le crisi convertendo le imprese in cooperative: lezioni da Argentina\, Italia e Canada
DESCRIPTION:Una delle grandi sfide per le comunità e il loro benessere socio-economico è il rischio diffuso di chiusura delle imprese a causa di molteplici fattori convergenti. \nFino all’inizio del 2020\, le difficoltà erano dovute principalmente agli effetti della globalizzazione e dell’austerità sulle economie locali\, nonché all’ondata di imprenditori della generazione del baby boom prossimi al ritiro. Entrambi questi scenari persistono tuttora. \nDal secondo trimestre del 2020\, tuttavia\, le difficoltà si sono aggravate: gli effetti socio-economici della pandemia di COVID-19 hanno messo a rischio la sopravvivenza della metà dei posti di lavoro a livello globale e di moltissime PMI\, che sono state salvate solo grazie agli interventi pubblici e ai sistemi di protezione sociale. Inoltre\, nei paesi del Nord globale\, la crisi di continuità aziendale è stata accentuata dal pensionamento di massa dei baby boomers\, molti dei quali non hanno piani di successione. In Canada e negli Stati Uniti\, ad esempio\, circa tre quarti degli imprenditori prossimi alla pensione non hanno predisposto un piano per il passaggio generazionale\, mettendo a rischio il benessere socio-economico delle comunità locali e\, nel caso canadese\, potenzialmente un terzo della forza lavoro del settore privato. \nContemporaneamente\, nel Sud Europa\, in America Latina e in alcune aree dell’Asia e dell’Africa\, crisi economiche persistenti\, politiche di austerità neoliberali e delocalizzazione della manodopera stanno contribuendo ad alti tassi di disoccupazione\, chiusure di imprese e crescente precarietà sociale ed economica. \nAlla luce di queste crisi sempre più croniche – aggravate da disuguaglianze\, emergenze ambientali e dinamiche del capitalismo globale – una risposta adottata in varie parti del mondo per salvare imprese in salute con problemi di successione o aziende in crisi (con i relativi posti di lavoro e le economie locali) è la conversione delle imprese in cooperative (Business Conversions to Cooperatives\, BCC). Le BCC includono: Worker buyouts (acquisti da parte dei lavoratori); Empresas recuperadas (imprese recuperate dai lavoratori\, WREs); conversioni guidate dai proprietari verso modelli cooperativi o di proprietà condivisa (es. cooperative di lavoratori\, multi-stakeholder\, di solidarietà\, o modelli a proprietà comunitaria). \nI pochi studi esistenti sulle BCC mostrano che queste esperienze: salvano posti di lavoro\, preservano le capacità produttive delle comunità e in alcuni casi affrontano anche la crisi ecologica\, integrando modelli di produzione sostenibile. \nIn questo seminario saranno presentati  i risultati di una ricerca interdisciplinare e collaborativa che Marcelo Vieta\, Presidente del Dipartimento di Leadership\, Higher and Adult Education e professore associato del Programma di Higher and Adult Education dell’Ontario Institute for Studies in Education dell’Università di Toronto\, conduce dal 2005 in Argentina\, Italia e Canada. SUMMARY:Klimaschutz im Tourismus: Wege und Irrwege
DESCRIPTION:Vortrag mit Helga Weisz\, Expertin für Klima- und Nachhaltigkeitsforschung \n\n\n\nDer Tourismus spielt eine zentrale Rolle im Umgang mit der Klimakrise. Einerseits leiden viele Reiseziele bereits unter klimatischen Veränderungen\, andererseits heizt die Branche mit steigenden CO₂-Emissionen den Wandel selbst mit an. Auch in Südtirol machen steigende Gästezahlen\, intensive Mobilität und hohe Anforderungen an Infrastruktur und Ressourcen einen nachhaltigen Umgang mit Umwelt und Klima immer dringlicher. Wie klimafreundlicher Tourismus gelingen kann\, ist Forschungsschwerpunkt der international renommierten Klima- und Nachhaltigkeitsforscherin Helga Weisz. \nWeisz ist Professorin für Industrielle Ökologie und Klimawandel an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und arbeitet gemeinsam mit dem Bundesverband der Deutschen Tourismuswirtschaft an der Etablierung des Deutschen Klimafonds Tourismus. In ihrem Vortrag zeigt sie mögliche Wege für einen nachhaltigen Tourismus auf. Zugleich macht sie aber auch deutlich\, welche vermeintlichen Lösungen sich als kontraproduktiv für die Bewältigung der Klimakrise erweisen könnten. \nIm Anschluss an den Vortrag findet eine Podiumsdiskussion mit lokalen Akteurinnen und Akteuren aus der Tourismusbranche statt\, um konkrete Lehren und Handlungsansätze\, aber auch Herausforderungen und Schwierigkeiten für den Südtiroler Kontext zu diskutieren. DESCRIPTION:Third edition: Perspectives on Anticipation\, Innovation\, Finance and Education. A Global UNESCO Chairs lecture series organized by the UNESCO Chair in Interdisciplinary Anticipation and Global-Local Transformation\, Center for Advanced Studies\, Eurac Research.  \nIn a rapidly evolving world\, preparing for the future demands innovative thinking and collaborative action. The third edition of the UNESCO Chair Lecture Series explores the critical challenges and transformative opportunities shaping our social\, economic\, political\, and ecological systems. Through an interdisciplinary lens\, the series brings together leading experts to address key issues such as anticipation\, innovation\, finance and education\, while fostering a deeper understanding of how global and local transformations can shape a more equitable and resilient future. One of the major players in looking ahead is the United Nation’s Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization\, UNESCO. DESCRIPTION:Inklusion im Bildungsbereich – Kontexte und Kontraste\nIn einem Kontext zunehmender Ungleichheiten und globaler Krisen werden Gerechtigkeit und Nachhaltigkeit zu zentralen Anliegen für eine wirklich inklusive Bildung. \nNoch nie waren die Themen equità und sostenibilità für die Weiterentwicklung inklusiver Bildung und Erziehung so wichtig wie heute.  In einer Zeit\, die von wachsender Ungleichheit und von Gegensätzen geprägt ist\, steht die Erziehungs- und Bildungswissenschaft vor der wichtigen Aufgabe\, Fragen der Gerechtigkeit und der Nachhaltigkeit wieder in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Aufmerksamkeit zu stellen. \nAngriffe auf demokratische und menschenrechtliche Grundwerte und wachsende Kontraste zwischen Armut und Reichtum fallen aktuell zusammen mit einem Kontext internationaler Konflikte und einer sich zunehmend verschärfenden Klimakrise. Dies führt zu der Herausforderung\, das Verhältnis zwischen Gleichheit\, Gerechtigkeit und Inklusion genauer auszuloten und dies im Kontext der verantwortlichen Positionierung innerhalb demokratischer Gesellschaften zu reflektieren. Denn es wird auch die Frage zu stellen sein\, welche Rolle Bildungsinstitutionen innerhalb demokratischer Gesellschaften zukommt und wie innerhalb von institutioneller Bildung und Erziehung heranwachsende Generationen in ihrer diesbezüglichen Handlungsfähigkeit und im Sinne von citizenship education gestärkt werden können. Es gilt\, konkrete Hinweise und Anhaltspunkte zu finden für eine demokratische\, an Nachhaltigkeit\, Inklusion und Gerechtigkeit ausgerichtete Bildungsforschung\, -praxis und -politik. \nEs greift folglich zu kurz\, dies von Seiten der Wissenschaft normativ von der Bildungspraxis einzufordern. Gli attacchi ai valori fondamentali della democrazia e dei diritti umani e il crescente contrasto tra povertà e ricchezza si inseriscono attualmente in un quadro di conflitti internazionali e nel contesto di una crisi climatica sempre più acuta. \nTutto ciò ci pone dinnanzi alla sfida di approfondire la relazione tra uguaglianza\, giustizia e inclusione e di assumere una postura responsabile nel riflettere sul significato che essa assume all’interno di una società democratica. È inoltre necessario interrogarsi su quale ruolo debbano assumere le istituzioni educative e come esse possano rafforzare le giovani generazioni nella propria capacità di agire in questa direzione e in termini di citizenship education. \nL’obiettivo è perciò quello di trovare indicazioni concrete e punti di riferimento per ricerche\, pratiche e politiche educative democratiche e orientate alla sostenibilità\, all’inclusione e alla giustizia. In questo senso risulta limitante la pretesa del mondo accademico che nella pratica educativa tutto ciò venga regolamentato dal punto di vista normativo. DESCRIPTION:Alessandro Tavoni’s study explores how common commitment strategies enhance cooperation in public good games\, with key implications for international climate agreements. \nThis study explores how conditional cooperation strategies affect collective action in a public good game\, particularly those resembling international climate negotiations. We rely on a laboratory economic experiment with about 1000 participants to investigate the relationship between group size and cooperation under a baseline and a common commitment condition. Results show that common commitment mechanisms significantly enhance and stabilize cooperation\, even in larger groups\, provided the group marginal return is sufficiently high. DESCRIPTION:Ort_schafft Natur-Klima \nKlimawandel und Biodiversitätsverlust stellen die nachhaltige Entwicklung von Städten weltweit vor große Herausforderungen. Ökosystemdienstleistungen wie saubere Luft\, Wasser und Umweltgesundheit geraten zunehmend unter Druck\, was soziale Ungleichheiten beim Zugang zu diesen Leistungen verstärkt. Auch die Gemeinden Südtirols sind mit diesen Herausforderungen konfrontiert\, haben jedoch die Chance\, eine Vorreiterrolle bei der Klimaanpassung und der urbanen Erneuerung einzunehmen. Naturbasierte Lösungen (NbS) – darunter grüne\, blaue und hybride Infrastrukturen – bieten dafür ein wirksames Instrument. Doch sie stoßen oft auf Hürden wie hohe Anfangsinvestitionen und langfristige Amortisation. Während kommunale Budgets und Ressourcen begrenzt sind\, verfügen private Unternehmen über finanzielle Mittel und technisches Know-how\, um NbS zu unterstützen. Öffentlich-private Partnerschaften können dabei helfen\, NbS im gebauten Raum Südtirols zu planen\, umzusetzen und zu skalieren. \nIm Rahmen dieses Workshops kommen Gemeinden\, Unternehmen und Fachleute zusammen\, um öffentlich-private Synergien auszuloten und gemeinsame Maßnahmen für NbS und urbane Erneuerung in Südtirol zu diskutieren. I servizi ecosistemici\, come aria pulita\, acqua e salute delle persone e dell’ambiente\, sono sempre più sotto pressione\, aumentando le disuguaglianze sociali nell’accesso a tali risorse. Anche i comuni dell’Alto Adige non sono esenti da queste sfide\, ma possono svolgere un ruolo fondamentale nell’adattamento climatico e nel rinnovare il territorio abitato. Possono farlo attraverso le soluzioni basate sulla natura (NbS)\, integrando infrastrutture verdi\, blu e ibride. Tuttavia\, l’implementazione delle NbS nel territorio è spesso ostacolata da barriere politiche\, regolatorie\, finanziarie e di competenze. Le aziende private\, specialmente nel settore delle costruzioni\, immobiliare e dell’architettura di paesaggio\, possiedono le risorse finanziarie e tecniche necessarie per garantire il successo delle NbS. Pertanto\, è fondamentale avviare un dibattito che favorisca la creazione di alleanze tra pubblico e privato in grado di supportare la pianificazione e l’espansione delle NbS nelle città e nei comuni dell’Alto Adige. Questo workshop riunisce comuni\, imprese ed esperti per discutere le potenziali sinergie tra pubblico e privato ed individuare azioni congiunte per lo sviluppo delle NbS in Alto Adige. DESCRIPTION:Vortrag mit Helga Weisz\, Expertin für Klima- und Nachhaltigkeitsforschung \n\n\n\nDer Tourismus spielt eine zentrale Rolle im Umgang mit der Klimakrise. Einerseits leiden viele Reiseziele bereits unter klimatischen Veränderungen\, andererseits heizt die Branche mit steigenden CO₂-Emissionen den Wandel selbst mit an. Auch in Südtirol machen steigende Gästezahlen\, intensive Mobilität und hohe Anforderungen an Infrastruktur und Ressourcen einen nachhaltigen Umgang mit Umwelt und Klima immer dringlicher. Wie klimafreundlicher Tourismus gelingen kann\, ist Forschungsschwerpunkt der international renommierten Klima- und Nachhaltigkeitsforscherin Helga Weisz. Weisz ist Professorin für Industrielle Ökologie und Klimawandel an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und arbeitet gemeinsam mit dem Bundesverband der Deutschen Tourismuswirtschaft an der Etablierung des Deutschen Klimafonds Tourismus. In ihrem Vortrag zeigt sie mögliche Wege für einen nachhaltigen Tourismus auf. Zugleich macht sie aber auch deutlich\, welche vermeintlichen Lösungen sich als kontraproduktiv für die Bewältigung der Klimakrise erweisen könnten. DESCRIPTION:In unserem Webinar erfahren Sie\, wie die faszinierende Schwarze Soldatenfliege (Hermetia illucens) die Nahrungsmittelproduktion revolutionieren kann und Sie als Unternehmer diese wertvolle Ressource ökologisch und ökonomisch nützen können. Wir werden ein Werk besichtigen\, in dem organische Abfälle durch die Schwarze Soldatenfliege verarbeitet werden\, um daraus proteinreiche Tiernahrung zu gewinnen.  Die Schwarze Soldatenfliege ist ein wahres Kraftpaket. Sie wird in der Kreislaufwirtschaft eine Schlüsselrolle einnehmen und ist aus der Zukunft einer nachhaltigen Nahrungs- und Futtermittelproduktion nicht mehr wegzudenken. Die Larven der Soldatenfliege verwandeln organische Abfälle in hochwertige Proteine und Fette\, die dann frisch\, getrocknet oder gemahlen als Zusatz in der Nutztier- und Pet-Food-Industrie sowie in der Aquakultur verwendet werden können. Die positiven Eigenschaften dieser Biomasse sind mittlerweile vielfach nachgewiesen. Dazu kommt\, dass Exkremente und Rückstände aus der Larvenzucht\, auch „Frass“ genannt\, reich an Chitin sind und sich hervorragend als organischer Dünger eignen. Le larve di questo insetto convertono i rifiuti organici in proteine e grassi di alta qualità che\, freschi\, secchi o macinati\, possono essere utilizzati come additivo nell’industria dei mangimi per animali d’allevamento e domestici\, nonché nell’acquacoltura. Le caratteristiche positive di questa biomassa sono state ormai più volte dimostrate. A ciò si aggiunge che gli escrementi e i residui derivanti dall’allevamento delle larve\, anche noti come frass\, sono ricchi di chitina e si prestano come eccellente fertilizzante organico. Speaker: Joachim Nigg – Universität Innsbruck \nExamining Accessible Tourism: Assessing on identities and leisure constraints for social sustainability \nAbstract: Building on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities\, the Sustainable Development Goals highlight the urge for social inclusion in manifold respects. The fact that the social component of sustainable development is still broadly neglected in economy\, however\, contributes to the ongoing social exclusion of people with disability. To foster their inclusion in leisure and travelling\, the accessible tourism approach describes collaborative processes towards thorough travel experiences along entire tourism value chains. Whereas existing literature underpins this urge for stakeholder collaboration\, research on identities related to it is scarce. Via a series of investigations the urge for collaborative identities where all stakeholders share a common sense for the project target is pivotal for fostering social sustainability transformations in tourism. SUMMARY:Transparency and Real Effects of Banks’ Climate Stress Tests
DESCRIPTION:The seminar\, led by Gerrit von Zedlitz-Neukirch\, will explore how climate stress tests impact banks’ disclosure and lending policies\, especially under ESG pressure. \nThe recent series of bottom-up climate stress tests constituted a new intervention into banks’ internal production of climate risk information. We examine whether this intervention leads to changes in disclosures and lending. We find that stress-tested banks expand their climate risk disclosures around the climate stress tests especially if they had high ex-ante commitments to ESG disclosures and high climate risk exposures. This increased climate risk transparency is accompanied by notable changes in lending behavior. Specifically\, high-risk borrowers of banks with a stronger change in commitment receive lower bank financing and adjust their operations. Overall\, these findings suggest that climate stress tests can commit banks to integrating climate risks into their financial risk management while also influencing the real economy. SUMMARY:Colloquium Platform Biodiversity South Tyrol - Cambiamenti climatici in montagna: i torrenti alpini tra fragilità e resistenza
DESCRIPTION:I cambiamenti climatici si manifestano con particolare evidenza in alta quota\, dove il ritiro dei ghiacciai e la degradazione del permafrost (terreno con temperature costantemente al di sotto degli 0°C) hanno importanti conseguenze anche sulla disponibilità di acqua e sulla qualità chimica\, fisica ed ecologica di laghi e torrenti.  Con uno sguardo al contesto globale e un focus locale sulla Val Venosta\, vedremo come la degradazione della criosfera alpina stia comportando una riduzione della qualità delle acque. Stiamo assistendo infatti a un incremento delle concentrazioni di metalli pesanti come Nichel e Uranio nei fiumi alpini\, con effetti anche cromatici che si manifestano come concrezioni biancastre che ricoprono il letto dei torrenti. Gi effetti si propagano anche a fondovalle\, laddove concentrazioni al di sopra dei limiti di qualità ambientale si rilevano ormai anche nel fiume Adige. Oltre al deterioramento della qualità chimica delle acque\, un’altra minaccia per gli ecosistemi acquatici è l’aumento delle temperature e la scomparsa degli habitat freddi come i torrenti alimentati dai ghiacciai. In questo contesto\, certe forme del paesaggio post-glaciale conferiscono alle zone di alta quota una certa resistenza idrologica\, alimentando laghi e torrenti. Da alcune di queste forme\, composte di frammenti rocciosi e spesso contenenti ghiaccio nascosto\, sgorgano sorgenti particolarmente fredde che ospitano specie di microbi e invertebrati a rischio di estinzione. La conservazione di questi gelidi rifugi è fondamentale per affrontare la crisi climatica\, che si aggiunge ai forti impatti locali di sovrasfruttamento ambientale moltiplicandone sinergicamente gli effetti ecologici.  \nStefano Brighenti è ricercatore in idroecologia alpina. Da una decina di anni si occupa degli effetti ecologici e idrologici dei cambiamenti climatici in alta quota. Ha pubblicato studi sull’ecologia dei torrenti alpini della Val Venosta\, sull’importanza idrologica dei ghiacciai e del permafrost e sulla qualità chimica delle acque alpine. DESCRIPTION:“Die europäische Klima- und Innovationspolitik steht vor einem globalen Dilemma – wie können wir Wandel gestalten und gleichzeitig weltweit Verantwortung übernehmen?” \nTrotz eines massiven Anstiegs der Weltbevölkerung ist in den vergangenen zwei Jahrhunderten die absolute Anzahl der weltweit in bitterer Armut lebenden Menschen zurückgegangen. Doch dieser Erfolgsgeschichte steht im gleichen Zeitraum eine rapide Zunahme der Umweltbelastungen gegenüber. Um diese zu begrenzen und die Tragfähigkeit des Planten zu bewahren\, aber zugleich den Weg der Menschheit aus Not und Elend fortzusetzen\, sind massive globale Anstrengungen notwendig. Mit Blick auf Deutschland und Europa hat eine rasche Senkung der Treibhausgas-Emissionen oberste Priorität\, wenn das übergeordnete Ziel der Klimaneutralität bald erreicht werden soll. Zugleich die Attraktivität des Wirtschaftsstandorts zu wahren\, wird nur mit marktwirtschaftlichen Lösungen gelingen\, allen voran einem umfassenden europäischen Emissionshandel\, nicht mit dem bisherigen kleinteilig-planwirtschaftlichen Ansatz. \nProf. Dr. Dr. h.c. Christoph M. Schmidt ist Präsident des RWI – Leibniz-Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung und ehemaliger Vorsitzender der Wirtschaftsweisen in Deutschland. SUMMARY:Safe Travels: Child protection and sustainable hospitality
DESCRIPTION:Safeguarding children is a cornerstone of social sustainability\, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16.2) and the Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics (UNWTO\, 2019). Addressing child abuse – whether through the exploitation of labour\, trafficking\, or sexual abuse – is essential\, and stakeholders in tourism must take an active role in preventing the mistreatment of minors. Organized by the Eurac Research Center for Advanced Studies\, the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt\, and the Gregorian Pontifical University’s Institute of Anthropology (IADC)\, in collaboration with ECPAT\, this international forum brings together experts from the hospitality industry\, NGOs\, and academia to tackle the critical issue of child protection in tourism. SUMMARY:The Role of Renewables in the Green Transition of Biofuels Production
DESCRIPTION:An insight into the integration of variable renewable energies in biofuels production as a key component of the green transition. \nThe integration of variable renewable energies (VREs) such as wind and solar (PV) in biofuels production is a key component of the green transition\, particularly in island settings. Many non-interconnected islands rely heavily on fossil fuels\, making renewable solutions both economically and environmentally viable. Recent studies on Greek islands like Anafi and Ai Stratis highlight the potential of hybrid systems combining PV and wind energy for sustainable electricity generation. To further enhance biofuel production\, hydrothermal treatment methods are being explored. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) are emerging technologies that convert agricultural waste into valuable biochar and biofuels. A novel approach\, PV-assisted hydrothermal pyrolysis (HYDROPYR)\, merges HTC with pyrolysis to optimize biocarbon production while utilizing renewable energy sources. This process significantly reduces the energy footprint of hydrothermal conversion by integrating solar power. Additionally\, hydrothermal carbonization is being investigated as a promising method for reducing persistent pollutants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater sludge. SUMMARY:Do consumers (have to) pay for ESG?
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Robert Raney\, IESE Business School\, examines the pricing of ESG in product markets with focus on ESG-related incidents in the airline industry. \nThis seminar examines the pricing of ESG (i.e.\, environmental\, social\, and governance) in product markets. Price effects may be demand-driven\, reflecting consumers’ willingness to pay for ESG outcomes\, or supply-driven\, as firms pass ESG-related costs onto consumers. \nFor identification\, we focus on ESG-related incidents in the airline industry\, which offers comprehensive public data on consumer prices. We observe that airlines increase ticket prices following ESG incidents. DESCRIPTION:Digital and sustainable transition in manufacturing and automotive industry \nThe Program aims to provide students with an introduction to the transition that is taking place in the automotive and manufacturing sectors (e.g.\, efficiency\, electrification\, advanced robotics\, digital twin\, simulation\, assistant systems\, and additive manufacturing) with particular focus on the new technologies with an eye to sustainability. SUMMARY:Klimaklagen und Klimagerechtigkeit in Zeiten des Klimawandels
DESCRIPTION:Die Veranstaltung beleuchtet die rechtlichen\, politischen und ökologischen Aspekte von Klimaklagen auf internationaler und nationaler Ebene\, mit Fokus auf Italien und Südtirol. \nDie Veranstaltung wird sich mit den rechtlichen\, politischen und ökologischen Dimensionen und Möglichkeiten von Klimaklagen auf internationaler und staatlicher Ebene befassen. Dabei wird ein internationaler Vergleich gezogen und der aktuelle Stand in Italien und Südtirol im internationalen Kontext beleuchtet. Im Fokus steht die Frage\, welche Verantwortung öffentliche Körperschaften und insbesondere Gemeinden in diesem Zusammenhang tragen und wie sie sich vor Klimaklagen im weiten Sinn schützen können.
