SUMMARY:Future lost?
In seinem Bestseller „Verkaufte Zukunft.

SUMMARY:Food\, Waste\, and Sustainability: Synergizing Ontology Efforts
DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop \nDescription and Aims \nNowadays\, waste\, especially that of food and plastics deriving from human consumption and activities along food supply chains\, poses serious concerns both in terms of human health and resilience and sustainability of food systems. While being a source of possible disease outbreaks and attracting wild animals to urban settlements\, food waste is correlated with reduced efficiency in water and energy usage and an increase in CO2 gas emissions. Contamination of agricultural soils and environments by plastics and microplastics is threatening the life of numerous species. As micro- and nanoplastics have also been detected in human tissues\, they raise questions regarding human well-being. These are just a few examples. \nBy fostering data annotation\, organization\, and interoperation\, ontologies ensure that datasets\, systems\, and people can be interconnected. This is a critical step to effectively deal with complex and widespread health and sustainability issues\, such as food and plastic waste. \nIn the last decades\, efforts in ontology development mainly focused on health and related features\, as witnessed by many of the resources provided by the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry. Recently\, attention has also been given to modeling sustainability issues\, which resulted in ontologies like Sustainability Core Ontology (SCO)\, Sustainable Development Goals Interface Ontology (SDGIO)\, Sustainable Met Systems Ontology (SuMSO)\, and Sustainable Development and Climate (SDC) Ontology. It is imperative to enhance interconnectedness among these ontologies and related applications. In particular\, it will be important to communicate across different ontology communities to adequately capture the intrinsic connections between health and sustainability. \nThe Food\, Waste\, and Sustainability: Synergizing Ontology Efforts 2025 Workshop\, held as part of the 16th International Conference on Biological and Biomedical Ontology (ICBO 2025)\, aims at promoting discussions in this direction\, focusing on waste as a starting use case. We plan three main sessions. In the first session\, we will explore present conceptualizations of waste within food systems\, with a particular emphasis on food and plastic waste. Attention will be primarily placed on deriving challenges and opportunities concerning human health\, resilience\, and sustainability of those systems. The second session will be dedicated to existing and work-in-progress ontologies. We will conversate on how such conceptualizations of the realm of food and plastic waste are implemented in computable ontological models\, knowledge graphs\, and related applications\, tracking down similarities and discrepancies. In the third session\, we will engage in an open discussion with experts in the field. Conversations will concentrate on how to synergize sustainability and health ontologies across ontology communities\, for harmonizing and interconnecting existing conceptualizations and representations of food systems waste. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to foster dialogues in support of human health and food systems resilience and sustainability. \nLanguage: English \nRegistration: ICBO2025 schedule \nEvent website: Home page

SUMMARY:Environmental-Unfriendly Tax Avoidance
DESCRIPTION:Research Seminar with Martin Jacob: Learn how multinational firms use carbon allowances and tax havens to reduce tax burdens and how this affects emissions\, innovation\, and green investments \n\nThis paper shows how firms use carbon allowances to reduce corporate tax burdens by exploiting internal trading hubs in low-tax jurisdictions and fluctuations in carbon prices. Using a unique dataset on all carbon allowance transactions of the European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) over the period 2014-2020\, we show that many multinational firms subject to the EU ETS use tax haven operations to substantially reduce corporate their tax burdens. These tax savings reduce tax avoidance firms’ net price for carbon allowances. In a subsequent step\, we examine how tax haven operations for carbon allowance trading\, i.e.\, tax avoidance with carbon allowances\, are associated with firms’ emission reduction\, innovation\, and investment in abatement technologies. \nRegistration for online participation: Microsoft Virtual Events Powered by Teams \nEvent website: Environmental-Unfriendly Tax Avoidance / Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

SUMMARY:Social ladders: the weight of social mobility
DESCRIPTION:Public lecture with Anthony Miro Born\, sociologist at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse Global Fellow \nPromoting social mobility has become a powerful concern in public\, political\, and academic debates. This talk\, however\, places the ideal of social mobility itself at the centre of analysis. Drawing on in-depth fieldwork in stigmatised neighbourhoods in Germany and Miro’s forthcoming book “Social Ladders” (Oxford University Press\, 2026)\, it explores the contradictions between the lofty promises of social mobility\, its ambivalent politics\, and its complex manifestations in people’s lived experiences. The talk shows how the language of social mobility and “more meritocracy” is often used to ignore the primary needs and problems of disadvantaged communities. It also argues that to understand the divisive nature and hidden costs of social mobility\, we must listen not only to the few who have ‘made it’ up the ladder to social and economic success. We must also include the voices of those commonly seen as having been ‘left behind.’ \nLanguage: The lecture will be held in English and is open to everyone interested. \nRegistration: No registration required. \nEvent website: https://www.eurac.edu/en/institutes-centers/center-for-advanced-studies/news-events/social-ladders-the-weight-of-social-mobility-anthony-miro-born

SUMMARY:Efficient rolling bearings: current challenges\, analysis methods\, and use-cases from the industry
DESCRIPTION:From CFD to design: discover how Schaeffler reduces rolling-bearing losses with smart analysis and lubricant modeling for efficient\, sustainable products. \nRolling bearings are machine elements that are used in a high number of industrial applications\, enabling low-friction support for rotating components. Particularly due to the electrification of the automotive industry\, requirements for further reduction of friction losses are increasing to meet the demands of sustainable and energy efficient products. \nSchaeffler is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rolling bearings and addresses these challenges through continuous product and analysis methods development. \nThis lecture will present practical solutions for friction reduction that are being developed and provided by Schaeffler. Insights will be given into how efficient and accurate analysis software can be used in the development process\, with a particular focus on the underlying methods and numerical simulations. \nA special emphasis will be placed on the analysis of lubricants used in rolling bearings\, utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The insights gained will be illustrated using examples from the industrial collaboration between unibz and Schaeffler. \nEvent website: Efficient rolling bearings: current challenges\, analysis methods\, and use-cases from the industry / Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

SUMMARY:Overtourism in Barcelona: empirical evidence
DESCRIPTION:Research seminar of the Cluster Tourism\, Marketing and Regional Development\nSpeaker: Prof. Philipp Wassler – University of Bergamo \nOvertourism has reemerged as a pressing issue in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic\, fuelling widespread public protests. Despite its growing relevance\, the concept remains ambiguously defined in academic discussions. This study seeks to clarify the notion of overtourism by adopting a resident-centered perspective\, emphasizing the economic\, demographic\, and socio-cultural factors that influence how the phenomenon is perceived. Focusing on Barcelona and employing a mixed-methods approach\, the research reveals that residents primarily associate overtourism with excessive crowding\, security concerns\, pollution\, and rising costs and gentrification. Through surveys of Barcelona residents and expert interviews\, the study finds that millennials are the most critical of overtourism\, a stance shaped by their lower economic reliance on tourism\, political ideology\, and higher education levels. \nLanguage: English \nOnline participation: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/241ca70d-f588-4999-a349-86ed054d8558@92513267-03e3-401a-80d4-c58ed6674e3b \nEvent website: https://www.unibz.it/en/events/overtourism-in-barcelona-empirical-evidence

SUMMARY:Futuring the rural
DESCRIPTION:Public lecture with Edgar Vladimirenko\, practicing architect and urbanist in Lithuania and UNESCO Chair Fellow \n\nAs tractors block capital boulevards and city ministries plan the countryside from afar\, the line between rural and urban dissolves. If we were to acknowledge the “complete urbanisation of society”\, rural territories become part of the urban system with functional and physical ties to the cities. Therefore rural Lithuania\, and much of Europe\, is neither the romantic periphery nor a museum piece; it is a palimpsest of political experiments whose unresolved governance now hinders ecological and social resilience. \nThis lecture aims to trace that dissolution. From Soviet agro-settlements to airport ghost‑villages\, through several symbolic locations\, the lecture seeks to reveal that rural areas are laboratories where traces of various “political seasons” have been inscribed. It further explores how tools of architecture and urbanism allow us to speculate the future of rural territories. \nJoin us on Teams! \nLanguage: The lecture will be held in English and is open to everyone interested. \nRegistration: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/483ba585-1d43-441f-9fb0-f42d5430216d@92513267-03e3-401a-80d4-c58ed6674e3b \nEvent website: https://www.eurac.edu/en/institutes-centers/center-for-advanced-studies/news-events/futuring-the-rural-lecture-edgar-vladimirenko

SUMMARY:Crisi climatica e ambiente fragile
\nLingua: Italiano \nSito web dell’evento: Calendario eventi – Naturmuseum Südtirol
