SUMMARY:Progressive politics? The European climate movement & Black Lives Matter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging discussion exploring the impact of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests on European climate activism. \nThe Center for Climate Change and Transformation and the Institute for Minority Rights are proud to invite you to a special webinar exploring the impact of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests on European climate activism. \nTo what extent did climate activist organizations change their goals and tactics because of the BLM protests in 2020? This webinar explores the extent to which European branches of Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for Future reframed their aims and changed their tactics to stop the oppression of minorities during those protests. Some activists believe that BLM is a distinct movement\, albeit one connected to climate action. In such cases\, participants advocate for allyship but not necessarily for a new formulation of their own organization’s goals. However\, other activists see BLM as a catalyst for change in the climate movement that has long been associated with having conservative roots. Overall\, the impact of BLM on the progressive aspects of the climate movement appears minimal. There is a need for more research on intersectionality in social movements\, and how contemporaneous social movements impact each other’s understanding of “progressive politics”. \nThis event is part of the ASCEND – ClimAte JuStiCe and INtersectionality: from ADaptation to Transformation project. \nLanguage: English \nRegistration (required by 28.11.2024): WEBINAR – Progressive Politics\, the European Climate Movement and Black Lives Matter \nProgram: 1731575060-webinar_progressivepolitics.pdf \nEvent Website: Progressive politics?
